A mosaic workshop in Madaba, a town known for its ancient mosaic floors, has taken on its largest group of apprentices in years.
Trainees spend their first months cutting small stone cubes by hand and copying simple borders before they are allowed to work on a commissioned piece.
"Everyone wants to start with the peacock," said Yousef, who runs the workshop. "We start with straight lines, because straight lines show every mistake."
The workshop sells pieces to visitors and takes commissions for homes and hotels, which helps pay apprentices a small wage while they train.
Several former apprentices have gone on to open their own studios in the town.
