Several family soap workshops in Aleppo have restarted production of the city's traditional olive and laurel oil soap, a process that takes months from cooking to finished bar.
The soap is cooked in large vats, poured onto the workshop floor to set, cut by hand and then stacked in towers to cure for at least six months.
"You cannot rush it, and that is the point," said Omar, whose family has made soap for three generations. "The bar you buy this winter was poured in spring."
Workshop owners said local demand is steady but modest, and that small online orders from buyers abroad are their best prospect for growth.
Several makers are working together on shared packaging and labelling to meet foreign retailers' requirements.
