Volunteer divers surveying a protected reef site near Aqaba say sections damaged by anchors several years ago are showing new coral growth.
The divers swim fixed routes every month, photographing marked squares of reef and counting fish species, so changes can be compared over time.
"You don't see recovery in one dive," said Leen, who coordinates the surveys. "You see it when you put this year's photo next to one from three years ago."
Mooring buoys installed at the site mean boats no longer drop anchor on the reef, which divers credit for much of the improvement.
The survey group is training more volunteers so it can add a second site next year.
