A group of independent Beirut booksellers has started sharing stalls at weekend markets, taking crates of second-hand and new titles to readers who rarely make it to their shops.

The sellers rotate who staffs the stall and split the costs, and each brings a different speciality: Arabic poetry, French paperbacks, children's books and old magazines.

"People stop for vegetables and leave with a novel," said Hala, who runs a shop specialising in out-of-print titles. "Half of them didn't know we existed."

The stall now takes orders for hard-to-find books, which are delivered the following weekend.

The group hopes to add a monthly reading corner for children before the end of the year.
