A small team of restorers has resumed work on the painted wooden ceilings of a traditional courtyard house in old Damascus, cleaning and stabilising panels decorated with floral patterns and calligraphy.
The work is slow. Each section is photographed, cleaned with soft brushes and mild solvents, and any loose paint is secured before the team moves on.
"We are not repainting anything," said Rasha, who leads the team. "The job is to stop the loss and let people see what was already there."
The team records every panel in a shared archive so future restorers know exactly what was done and why.
The owners hope to open the courtyard to small groups once the main reception room is finished.
