Family-run shops in an old market district have been installing shared rooftop solar panels, splitting the cost among neighbouring businesses.
Shop owners said the panels lower their monthly electricity bills and, with small batteries, keep refrigerators and lights running during power cuts.
"For a butcher or a dairy shop, a power cut is money in the bin," said Tareq, who sells cheese and yoghurt. "The panels paid for themselves faster than I expected."
Installers said the main challenge is old roofs, many of which need reinforcement before panels can be mounted safely.
A local business association is compiling a list of approved installers to help others make the switch.
